“Girl Overboard” is one of the most powerful, provocative novels I have ever laid my eyes on. The cover is slightly misleading (featuring a girl holding a snowboard): As I picked it up, I imagined it to be one of the charactaristic, pop-fiction novels with hardly any substance. But how wrong could I be? Headley’s words create an image beyond that of black-and-white; beyond ink-and-paper. She reaches through the pages of her book and uses the character of Syrah to grasp the reader’s heart. The depth of a billionaire’s daughter and her twisted life struck me and warmed me. From Syrah’s leg injury, to her dreams of professional snowboarding, to going out on a limb to help a little girl with cancer, Syrah has to cope with a haunting past, but also faces a beautiful future. Perhaps she, as a rich girl, has a bit more opportunity than the rest of us; but the fact that she wants out says enough.
